The paper will present my current research on the sanctuary of Apollo Hyperteleatas in Laconia. The objective is to consider the religious customs of the perioikoi from a local perspective. I argue that Sparta in the Archaic period to the second century BC controlled the region and its foreign affairs, but the local communities formed regional religious centres not closely monitored by Sparta. I build my investigation through two foci: first, the sanctuary as a place of elite patronage in the Archaic and Classical periods, especially through the architectural similarities with other Laconian temples and the rich votive gifts in bronze, such as the drinking shapes. Second, the sanctuary was central to the region of Molaoi: to the south lay Kyparissia, to the west Akriai and Kotyrta, and to the east Epidaurus Limera. The position of the sanctuary is evident by a number of proxenoi decrees of the second century BC set up at the sanctuary that show its central importance to the region.
